Winter on the West Coast brings a shift in pace, but behind the scenes, community initiatives in Port Owen remain highly active. The Port Owen Property Owners Association (POPOA / POEV) recently released its June 2026 newsletter, highlighting key civic updates, environmental focus areas, and a celebration of local winter events.
Here is a breakdown of what is happening across the marina community this season.
Environmental Management & Refuse Tracking
Maintaining the aesthetic and ecological health of the marina remains a core priority. POPOA has formally engaged the local municipality to request that refuse collection remain on Mondays. Because Port Owen experiences high weekend and holiday traffic, a shift to Tuesdays would leave waste bags exposed on curbsides for longer periods. This exposure increases the risk of wildlife interference and wind-scattered litter entering the local waterways.
Key Refuse Notes for Residents:
Bag Allocation: Municipal refuse bags are available for collection starting 1 July.
Sorting Protocols: Black bags are designated for general household waste, green bags for garden refuse, and clear bags for recycling.
Securing Waste: Residents can contact the association to inquire about acquiring secure refuse stands to prevent bags from being torn open before collection day.
Green Spaces and Infrastructure Restoration
Following the successful completion of municipal water infrastructure work at the Jocelyn Street fountain, attention has turned to landscaping. The surrounding garden area sustained damage during construction, and a rehabilitation project is underway. POPOA is currently requesting donations of water-wise plants and compost, alongside hands-on volunteer assistance from the community to restore the space.
Concurrently, clearing and upgrading work continues at the main town entrance as weather permits, with a future green space upgrade slated for Karen Crescent.
A Night on the Water: Winter Wonderland Success
The newsletter extended formal appreciation to the Port Owen Yacht Club for organizing the recent Winter Wonderland “Anything-That-Floats” parade. The event brought together residents of all ages who braved the winter cold to decorate a diverse array of vessels with custom light displays. The accompanying Night Market also recorded strong turnout, providing a successful mid-year platform for local vendors and community interaction.
